Social media may be making people smarter — or at least making them better writers.
Ivan Smirnov, a researcher in Moscow, studied how the complexity of social media messages changed over time by evaluating a Russian social media site similar to Facebook between 2008 and 2016.
Smirnov found that posts became more complex as people aged. More educated people also tended to write more complex messages.
But aging alone doesn’t explain why the overall complexity of the messages is so rapidly increasing. The average 15-year-old’s social media post in 2016 is more complex than that of any age group in 2008.
