No matter what you write--whether it's 140 characters on Twitter or 100,000 words in a novel--the writing's power comes from making an emotional connection with your readers. To connect with your readers, you have to know your readers. What drives them? What are they looking for when they read your copy? You also need to understand the human desire for story. We understand our world and our needs better when we explore them through story. Stories are all about emotion, and connecting with your readers through story is a powerful way to keep them engaged.

And then be sure you proofread that baby before you let it fly. Readers may overlook a typo or three, but grammar and spelling errors let them know you're not putting out professional-quality material. Readers who are first encountering your work don't have a lot to go on except the way you present yourself. Put your best foot forward every time.
