A new app for reading quality journalism has hit the Apple App Store in a soft launch on Monday.
The app is called Flightmode. It’s designed to let people “easily read quality journalism.”
Flightmode uses a database called Alexandria to recommend content. Alexandria follows about 15,000 “journalists, thinkers, specialists, and intellectuals” to help make article recommendations on Flightmode. Alexandria organizes articles by word count and quality and pulls around 500 quality articles each day.
An algorithm called Sia selects which content a user sees. According to the app’s creators, Sia wants to push people past their comfort zones and expose them to content they may not normally read. A human editor will also oversee the process.
