There’s good news for media outlets and journalists who have been hankering for ways to monetize their content on Facebook: Facebook recently announced new paywalls that will soon be available on its Instant Articles platform.

With a huge amount of news consumption on the Facebook platform, publishers have been eager to turn Facebook users into paying customers. Publishers are reportedly being told that users will be able to view 10 articles per month for free before the paywall kicks in. Publishers will have total control over their subscriber data, and the proposal would include “freemium” models.

Facebook is planning to test the model with a small group of publishers before the end of the year; if it goes well, they could expand the program in 2018.
